Happy trails to you

Ally Schlegel is leaving Chicago Stars FC to pursue free agency.
“I wanted to be the one to tell you this, that I am exploring new opportunities, but I wanted to take this time to thank the club, the city, the fans, for everything.” Schlegel said in a video shared on Chicago Stars’ social media pages.
Schlegel was selected by the Stars in 2023 in the second round of the 2023 draft out of Penn State University. In her first preseason, she signed a three-year contract, with an option for a 4th year. This past summer, the Stars declined her option, and Schlegel became a free agent.
The Coloradan was embraced by Chicago fans for her gritty play, and made frequent media appearances for the Stars. Last season, she was the lone Stars FC player featured in Amazon’s For The Win documentary about the 2024 NWSL playoffs.
In three seasons with the Stars, Schlegel scored twelve goals, and six assists—five of those assists came this season alone. According to fbref.com, she ranks in the 99th percentile in headers won for both forwards and midfielders. This season, she was second only to Taylor Flint (six inches senior to Schlegel in height) in headers won.
Building for 2026 begins
On Monday morning, the Stars announced midfielder Brianna Pinto has signed a two-year contract with the club. Pinto’s an important addition to the Stars midfield, especially with Schlegel’s departure.
“Brianna is a proven leader on and off the pitch, and she brings a high standard of excellence," said Chicago Stars general manager, Richard Feuz in the team’s press release. "She has a dynamic skillset on both sides of the ball that will undoubtedly bolster our midfield.”
The Stars are in dire need of a veteran’s skillset in midfield after their second last-place finish in three seasons.
As the roster begins to take form, Alyssa Naeher remains the Stars biggest question mark. The longtime captain and goalkeeper has yet to make any decision about her 2026 season.
But no matter who signs for the Stars next season, it’s hard not to see 2026 as another rebuilding season for the club.
